Agenda

The Optical Storage Technology Association presents its 7th annual Optical Storage Symposium .

Market Watch - Industry Leaders, Conversations and Perspectives
Description:
Optical recording products have unique characteristics that complement other products and data storage applications.  As an inexpensive storage media optical discs have become an important means to move and share music and data files.  The archival characteristics of optical media make it well-suited to support photo archiving and applications where data must be retained for compliance of industry and government regulations.  As power consumption in data centers becomes a more acute issue, optical storage products will serve a role in an organization's data storage planning. A panel of industry experts will discuss data storage issues and where optical products can serve an important role in the market.

Digital Photos: The Mysterious Disappearing Act
Description:
The photography industry's transition from analog to digital has presented a number of issues that need to be addressed to assure that photos taken today will be available in the future.  The vulnerability of storage devices, limitations of tools to find images, issues of transferring photos between various online services and local systems, and non-standard labeling options are all considerations.  How can the market be educated to archive photos so a generation of digital images does not disappear? This panel will discuss some of the critical issues in digital photography and what alternatives are available to protect consumer’s photo collections.

Optical Storage: A Critical Component in Enterprise Environments
Description:
Optical storage has many characteristics that make it uniquely suited for certain requirements in the enterprise data centers.  Archivability is critical to support a variety of compliance and data retention requirements and optical is the only technology that can truly address this need.  Optical is also a cost-efficient way to store static content that can be migrated off spinning storage systems.  A panel of integrators, consultants, and data site managers will discuss optical's position in enterprise environments.

Blu is the New Green
Description:
Blu-ray technology has provided a dramatic increase in optical storage capacity, positioning it as a viable option in the data center.  While archivability is often recognized as the most important attribute for optical media, there is a growing interest in the energy savings and "green" benefits it provides.   Organizations like Green Grid, TUV, and public utilities all understand the need to advance green data storage and optical could be an important contributor to this effort.
